The neighborhood of Stapleton was a product of the complete overhaul and tear down of what used to be Denver’s primary airport. When Denver International Airport (DIA) was being constructed and announced as Denver’s new primary airport, there was no longer a need for Stapleton International Airport. In addition, the airport was not in the best condition and residents of Park Hill were growing angry because of the noise of the planes. It was decommissioned in 1995 and as DIA was being built, plans to demolish and rebuild the Stapleton area were being put in place. Today, the land that the Stapleton International Airport was on is now home to a large shopping and residential area.
A planned community at the site of the former Stapleton Airport, Stapleton is a green community that even offers chicken coops as an option for new construction homes. Homes are set back from the streets in order to provide a better pedestrian experience. Six million tons of former concrete runways was turned into stone used throughout Colorado. More than 26,000 trees were planted in the area to help minimize greenhouse gas and maximize neighborhood beauty. Stapleton received national recognition as the site of the 2011 HGTV Green Home.
Central Park, located within Stapleton, provides hiking and jogging trails that lead to spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. Because the area is newly-developed, the sense of community isn’t fully developed but is definitely growing. Neighborhood events include concerts, farmers markets, outdoor movies, and neighborhood-wide garage sales. The Shops at Northfield Stapleton offer diverse options in shopping and dining. If you like the small town feeling of shopping and dining, you can enjoy exploring the East 29th Avenue Town Center.
With commuting times of 10 minutes to Downtown Denver and 20 minutes to Denver International Airport, Stapleton is centrally located and poised to be one of the greatest planned communities in the nation. As the largest in size of Denver neighborhoods, Stapleton is growing each year. When you aren’t busy shopping, you can come home the many different home communities that you can find in Stapleton, including Richmond, David Weekley, and Century homes. A family friendly community encouraging residents to shop local and consider their environmental impact, Stapleton is a home with a conscience.
