LoDo is short for Lower Downtown, and is the original settlement of Denver. LoDo is the oldest and arguably the most historic part of Downtown Denver. It is legally zoned as the Union Station neighborhood. It has recently been going through a period of revitalization after being known as a skid row for quite some time. After some restoration, Lodo is now a hot neighborhood in Denver where you can always find something to do.
The legal boundaries are Cherry Creek and Speer Boulevard to the southwest, South Platte River to the northwest, 20th Street to the northeast and Lawrence Street to the southeast. Because this neighborhood lies within the original street grid, the streets run parallel to South Platte River and diagonal to the four cardinal directions of the compass.
Attractions in LoDo are numerous, including more than 90 brewpubs, sports bars, restaurants and coffee houses, and Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies. Destinations include the 16th Street Mall, Larimer Square and Riverfront. The 16th Street Mall is a pedestrian mall running along 16th Street. Closed to vehicles other than the free shuttles which run from end to end, 16th Street offers food, drink, street performers and some of the best people-watching in the Denver area. Larimer Square is best visited at night, when the bulbs strung above the streets create a canopy of light for the 18 shops offering the best in food and fashion. The Riverfront is home to Confluence Park and a 40-mile bike path that follows the South Platte River. REI’s towering flagship store anchors the confluence of South Platte River and Cherry Creek. Also in this area is My Brother’s Bar, the only Denver establishment left that was frequented by Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady.
When it’s time to come home, you have the choice to live in the many apartments, condos, and townhomes that can be found in LoDo. LoDo is the perfect spot to live if you always want to be where the action is.
