Five Points is located one mile northeast of downtown Denver. The neighborhood of Five Points has been called the “Harlem of the West.” There is plenty of history that can be found in Five Points. One of the oldest areas of Denver, Five Points is a location where the original street grid running parallel to South Platte River and Cherry Creek changes to the modern layout with streets following the four cardinal points on the compass. Because of this transition, several intersections are vertexes which give the area its name.
With the addition of Light Rail stations, this neighborhood just north of Denver’s central business district has become more accessible. Five Points has a rich history in African American music, with some of the history’s greatest musicians such as Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday all having performed on Welton Street and in clubs such as The Rainbow Room and Rossonian. In fact, Five Points is one of the few historically African-American owned commercial centers in the country. The Stiles African-American Heritage Center, The Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library and The Black American West Museum and Heritage Center are dedicated to highlighting this story of the early African-American in the West. Jack Kerouac mentioned the area often in On the Road.
Five Points is an up-and-coming neighborhood of Denver, with old Victorian homes mixed with fresh condo and apartment buildings. The recent opening of the Five Points Business District office has caused revitalization in this neighborhood.
