Cheesman Park itself used to be Mt. Prospect Cemetery, before Denver began expanding to the area. Once Denver’s growth surrounded the neglected cemetery, Congress allowed the area to be converted to a park, which was originally named Congress Park. It was re-named Cheesman Park in honor of Denver pioneer Walter Cheesman, whose family donated the money to construct the pavilion on the east side of the park after his death. Cheesman Park sits on 80.7 acres of land, which provides plenty of space for walking, running, jogging, playing with the dog, or picnics.
The neighborhood of Cheesman Park is defined by Colfax Avenue, Downing Street, 8th Avenue, and Josephine Street and is between Capitol Hill (west) and Congress Park (east) neighborhoods. You can find the Denver Botanic Gardens in this neighborhood as well as Congress Park. The location of this neighborhood couldn’t be better. Cheesman Park is located within minutes of Capitol Hill and Cherry Creek so you can enjoy shopping and nightlife in these neighborhoods.
Known for above-average education levels, with more single/unmarried and less children in the households than the city’s average, residential units are comprised mainly of apartment and condo buildings, along with older mansions converted to apartments and condos. The majority of residents in Cheesman Park are renting apartments that are filled with character. However, Cheesman Park still provides great single family housing for anyone who is looking for a house in the area. Cheesman Park is considered the GLBT headquarters of Denver.
