Capitol Hill, or Cap Hill, is southeast of Denver’s central business district, bordered by Broadway, Downing Street, Colfax Avenue and Seventh Avenue. It is Denver’s mostly densely populated neighborhood so there are plenty of people to meet and hang out with.
The neighborhood’s name comes from the gold-domed Capitol Building, which anchors the neighborhood. The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, with its 210-foot spire, hosted Pope John Paul II, who conducted a mass there for World Youth Day in 1993. Today, Cap Hill is an eclectic mix of inner residential streets and larger retail corridors, such as Colfax, East 8th Avenue, East 13th Avenue, East 14th Avenue, Lincoln Street and Broadway.
Turn-of-the-century mansions are neighbors with modern condo and apartment buildings. Parking is scarce in the area, so walking or riding bicycles are the preferred modes of transportation, along with public transit. Almost anything a resident needs is within walking or biking distance, including entertainment, shopping, restaurants, clubs and groceries. Cap Hill has a bohemian reputation partly because The Colburn Hotel on Grant Street was the one-time home of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsburg.
Capitol Hill is home to the Denver Botanic Gardens and The Molly Brown House. It also boasts a great live music scene including the well-known venues of the Fillmore Auditorium and Odgen Theater. Cap Hill serves as a hub for Denver’s GLBT and punk communities, offering music and shopping opportunities for both.
