Bonnie Brae is a neighborhood of approximately 700 homes located in an area surrounded by East Exposition Avenue to the north, South Steel Street to the east, East Mississippi Avenue to the south and University Boulevard to the west.
Outside of the original settlement in Downtown Denver, Bonnie Brae is one of the few areas whose streets don’t follow the cardinal points of a compass. Instead, streets are curving and twisting roads designed around an elliptical park in the center.
George W. Olinger named “Bonnie Brae” (which means pleasant hill in Gaelic) after a subdivision in Kansas he hoped to recreate in South Denver. Unfortunately, the development went bankrupt in 1928. Further development was slowed by the Great Depression. Finally, in 1936 the planned park was constructed and houses sprung up along the streets surrounding the park. Businesses, too, began calling Bonnie Brae “home.” European influences in architecture, the opening of the Bonnie Brae Tavern, and the opening of many other businesses have caused Bonnie Brae to be a thriving neighborhood. The Bonnie Brae Tavern has been a staple of the community since before it was a community. Founded right after the end of Prohibition, and kitty-corner from the residence of leaders of the Temperance Movement, the Bonnie Brae Tavern is still family-owned and will celebrate its 80th Anniversary in 2014. Although it is technically in Washington Park because it is on the other side of University Boulevard, Bonnie Brae Ice Cream serves homemade ice cream that is consistently ranked among Westword’s “Best Of,” including Readers’ Choice Best Ice Cream for 2013.
The Bonnie Brae neighborhood contains lots of character. You can find large lush trees, winding streets, and friendly neighbors in this neighborhood. The houses range from the smaller, original homes to large million dollar homes. One of the great things about living in Bonnie Brae is the close proximity to local shops, restaurants, Downtown Denver, and parks.
