Founded in 1891 as Fletcher, the town was renamed “Aurora” in 1907. Aurora was selected by The National Civic League as an All-American city in 2008. Birthplace to our current Secretary of State, John Kerry, Aurora is a large metropolitan area with its own flavor.
Since incorporation in 1929, Aurora has become quite the city for many people. It grew from a small town to one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. Proud of not being just a suburb of Denver, Aurora is the third most populous city in Colorado. North Aurora spans two counties, Adams and Arapahoe, and is located east of Denver. Aurora North borders Denver neighborhoods Stapleton and Lowry. It is located right near the main highway of I-225 for easy access to Downtown Denver and other south metro area cities.
Aurora has a large military presence, and is home to Buckley Air Force Base, the largest employer in Aurora and one of the only Air Force bases in the US to house all five branches of the military. Eleven colleges and universities are in Aurora, along with the Fitzsimons redevelopment which is home to the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus and the Fitzsimons Life Science District. Also in the area is the Children’s Hospital. Largest employers outside of education and medicine include Raytheon, ADT Security Systems, and Lockheed Martin. In addition to new development, you can find the recently renovated Aurora Mall on this side of town for your shopping purposes along with plenty of restaurants.
With close proximity to Denver and both Denver International and Front Range Airports, Aurora’s official nickname is “The Gateway to the Rocky Mountains.” North Aurora is “old town” Aurora, as the housing is mostly wood-frame ranches built in the 1940’s – 1950’s. Aurora North offers the conveniences of living near Denver neighborhoods without living in Denver.
