Richthofen Castle

Richthofen Castle

Did you know that we have a castle in Denver? Most people are aware of the neighborhood located between Monaco and Quebec and 12th avenue and 7th avenue. It blends into Montclair and across the street is Mayfair and Hale. This is a Denver Historic Neighborhood known as Richthofen and it holds one of the greatest homes ever built, Richthofen Castle.

The Richthofen Castle was built by Walter Von Richthofen. He was the uncle to the Red Baron, founder of Denver Chamber of Commerce and the co-founder of the Montclair neighborhood. Construction of the Richthofen Castle began in 1883 and the project was completed in 1887. The castle was modeled after the original Richthofen Castle in Germany. This is the only true castle that exists in Denver, Colorado.

This amazing castle has 14,938 square feet of living space with a lot size of 45,900 square feet. There are 35 total rooms including: a drawing room, library, music alcove, servant’s quarters, butler’s pantry, billiards room, and the Red Baron’s bar. This castle also offers 8 bedrooms, and 7 bathrooms.

The Richthofen Castle was built out of Colorado limestone and has a porte-cochere, a stone tower, and wrap-around terrace. Hand-tooled leather wallpaper decorates the walls with leaded glass and some of the most sophisticated hand crafted woodwork in all of Denver. In 1910, E.B. Hendrie spent 2 million dollars on converting the second story of the front façade from a crenelated parapet fortress to a modified Tudor.

Richthofen Castle went on the market in 2012. According to the National Register, this castle is the most remarkable residence in all of Denver. It didn’t take long for someone to notice, the castle was sold in 3 months. The list price was 3.75 million and sold for 3.49 million in June 2012. While there were many homes that sold in the similar price range or more the same year, none of them have the history, decadence, or character of this home.
